The big story at this year’s Sydney International Motor Show was the Volvo S60's ground-breaking Pedestrian Avoidance Technology. Brought to you by the inventors of the 3-point seatbelt, Volvo’s pedestrian avoidance system can detect pedestrians near the path of the oncoming car and assess if the pedestrian is in danger. It then warns the driver and pre-charges the brakes. If the driver doesn't respond to the warning, full braking power is applied to stop the vehicle. At higher speeds the emphasis is on reducing the vehicle speed to minimise the impact. The system could reduce the fatality risk of a pedestrian collision by up to 85 percent. The All-New Volvo S60 will be available in dealerships from 11 December.
